The world is not hungry, but it is thirsty (渴). It seems strange that nearly 3/4 of the earth is c
overed with water while we say we are short of water. Why? Because about 97% of water on the earth
is sea water which we can't drink or use for watering plants. Man can only drink and use the 3%-
the water that comes from dyers and lakes. And we can't even use all of that, because some of it
has been polluted (污染).
Now more water is needed, but the problem is: Can we avoid (避免) a serious water shortage (短
缺) later on? Later, we should all learn how to save water. Secondly, we should find out the ways
to reuse (再利用) it. Scientists have always been studying in this field. Today, in most large cities, water is
used only once and then runs to the sea or dyers. But it can be used again. Even if (即使) every large city reused its water still there would not be enough. What could people turn to
next?
The sea seems to have the best answer. There is a lot of water in the sea. All that needs to be
done is to get the salt out of the sea water. This is expensive, but it's already in use in many
parts of the world. Scientists are trying to find a cheaper way of doing it. So you see, if we can
find a way out well be in no danger of drying up.

“Life is speeding up. Everyone is getting unwell.”
This may sound like something someone would say today. But in fact, an unknown person who live
d in Rome in AD() 53 wrote it
We all love new inventions. They are exciting, amazing and can even change our lives.
But have all these developments really improved the quality of our lives?

rings, a QQ message from your
friend appears on the screen, the noise from the television is getting louder and louder. Suddenly
the computer goes blank and you lose all your work. Now you have to stay up all night to get it do
ne. How happy do you feel?
Inventions have speeded up our lives so much that they often leave up feeling stressed () and
tired. Why do you think people who live far away from noisy cities, who have no telephones, no car,
not even any electricity often seem to be happier? Perhaps because they live simpler lives.
One family in the UK went “back in time” to see what life was like without all the invention
s we have today. The grandparents, with their daughter, and grandsons Benjamin, 10 and Thomans, 7,
spent nine weeks in a 1940s house. They had no washing machine, microwave, computer or mobile phone
s.
The grandmother, Lyn, said, “The more things you have, the more difficult life becomes.” The
boys said they fought less. Probably, they said, because there was less to fight over, such as the
ir computer. Benjamin also noticed that his grandmother had changed from being a “trendy(), beer-
drinking granny, to one who cooked things”
