by the time引导的时间状语从句用一般过去时，主句用过去完成时。过去完成时的结构：had＋过去分词。过去完成时是一种相对的时态，它表示动作发生的时间是过去的过去。eg：
By the time he was fourteen，he had learned math for Grade Three.到他14岁的时候，他已学完了(初)三年级的数学。
【拓展】过去完成时的用法
①与by，before构成的短语连用。eg：
We had got to the station before nine o\'clock.9点前我们就已到了车站。
②与by the time，before，when等引导的从句连用。eg：
By the time I got home，my mother had already finished cooking.我到家时，我妈妈早已做完饭了。
③用于宾语从句中。eg：
He said he had finished his work.他说他已经完成了他的工作。
