A
Not long ago, I answered a telephone call from an old friend who I’d not heard from for a long time.
“Hi, my good friend,” said the voice on the end. “I just wanted to see how you’re getting along.”
At the end of the conversation, he said, “If you need me in any way, I’ll be happy to help out.” And he meant it! That call came at just the right time. I needed those words of encouragement. I hung up the phone and felt very warm in my heart.
And that day I relearned something important about life: Life is first about people, not plans, not to-do lists and a million tasks left undone—it’s about people.
To love and to know that we are loved is the greatest happiness. And happiness seems to be something that is in short supply for too many of us! My friend reminded me that it is never enough just to love; we must also express it.
George William Childs put it like this: “Do not keep the box of your love and friendship closed up until your friends are gone. Fill their lives with sweetness. Speak cheering words while their ears can hear them and while their hearts can be made happier.”
Happiness may be just a phone call.

More and more parents leave their home and come into the big cities to make money. But their children can’t go with them because their children must go to school in their hometown. They are called home-left children. The problems of home-left children become more and more serious. And it becomes a big burden of our society. The first problem is that some home-left children become very lonely without parents’ love. And they are too young to tell right or wrong in many things. So they are fooled very easily by others.
Xiao Mei, a 14-year-old girl, is a home-left child. Her parents are all in Shanghai. She is in her hometown with her grandpa. She likes playing games on the Internet. Her parents and grandpa only give her money and food. They seldom care for her studies. One day, she had no money to pay for the games in the Net bar. So she stole some money from her neighbor. Just at that time, Xiao Fang, a 9-year-old girl saw it. Xiao Mei was afraid that Xiao Fang would tell others about it. She cut Xiao Fang’s throat with a knife, then she cleaned the blood on her hand and went to school just like nothing happened. Xiao Fang was saved by the doctors.
