五、完形填空
Many people believe everything or almost everything they read in newspapers or hear on radio. A few years ago I read a story about a husband and wife who made a 1 mistake. They went shopping and took their small baby 2 with them. After they had finished their shopping, they returned to their car to go home. 3 they reached their car, they put the baby in the plastic baby carrier that he rode in for safety. The couple then 4 in their car toward home. After they had driven a few miles, they looked at the back seat to see how the baby was. To their surprise, the baby was not there. According to the story, the couple had put the plastic seat and the baby on the top of the car but 5 to put him inside the car. They drove away with the baby on the top of the car.
The couple drove back 6 the store but did not find the baby. They called the police, and the police said that they had the baby and that the baby was fine. The baby fell down from the top of the car but was 7 by his plastic seat. The 8 couple took their baby home and were always careful after that.
There was one thing wrong with the story. It was not true. Stories such as this one are often 9 in newspapers and on radio and television. Because they are read and heard in places that usually report the truth, many people believe them. People also believe them because, like the story 10 , they have something unusual or frightening about them What is strange is that newspaper and radio reporters believe them.

六、阅读理解.
TV was one of the greatest inventions in the 20th century.Nowadays, nearly every house hold has at least one TV set.
Television came into being based on the inventions and discoveries of many scientists. On
April 7,l 927,the first public television programme was broadcast in the USA.The signals were
received on a very small screen. It was only about the size of a business card. The pictures were
reddish and not clear.
In the 1930s,bigger screens appeared with black-and-white pictures. However,a snowy
picture was the best many TV viewers could hope for.Often, they could only get one station, and only when the weather conditions were good.
When World War Ⅱ(1939—1945)began.the development of TV stopped. There were a very small number of TV sets in the hands of the public.By 1945.there were fewer than 7,000 working TV sets in the USA.A TV set cost about half the price of a car at that time.
The time period after World War Ⅱ is considered the final birth of television.Families saved money during the war years, and wanted to buy a lot of things after the war.TV sets were soon put onto the‘must have’list.1950—1959 was an exciting time period for television.Colour television and remote controls came out during this time.By 1955.the cost of TV sets came down a lot.Instead of being equal to half the price of a car, they were now just equal to the cost of a new set of tires. That marks the beginning of the booming age of TV.
