I. Teaching aims and learning objectives

1. know the rules of the stress in sentences;
2. know how to express different meanings by stressing different words.

IV. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Lead-in
1. Read a dialogue.
T: Hello, boys and girls, today we will learn Study skills of Unit 3. First, read a dialogue with your partner.
2. Watch a video.
T: Let’s watch the video of the dialogue and find out the difference between your speaking and the actors’.
T: When the actors are talking, they stress some important words. That makes the dialogue livelier. Today we are going to learn stress in sentences.

Step 2 Presentation
1. What should we stress?
T: When we want to stress some words in a sentence, we should pay attention to these three questions: What should we stress? How do we stress them? And why do we stress them? First let’s talk about the first question. What should we stress in a sentence? When we speak English, we often stress important words. These words are usually the content words. Watch the video about content words.
2. Content words and structure words.
T: Content words include nouns, main verbs, adjectives and adverbs. We do not usually stress less important words. These words are usually the structure words. Watch the video about structure words.
T: Structure words include: articles, prepositions, pronouns, auxiliary verbs and conjunctions.

Step 3 Practice
1. Read the sentences.
My aunt is a teacher in a middle school.
Mr Lin is going to visit the USA next month.
2. Find out the words to stress.
  T: Look at this sentence, can you find out the stressed words.
I’ll be driving to the market to buy something to eat.
  T: Let’s watch the video and check your answers.

Step 4 Presentation
How do we stress words?
T: We have learnt that we should stress the content words. But how can we stress them? Let’s still take this sentence as an example.
I’ll be driving to the market to buy something to eat.
T: From the video, we know that when we read the stressed words, the tone should go up.

Step 5 Practice
1. Listen and pay attention to the stressed words.
2. Read and pay attention to the stressed words.
I’m working at the store. I’m selling women’s shoes. I started working there last week.

Step 6 Presentation
Why do we stress words?
T: Here comes the last question. Why do we stress these words? We can stress some of the words to express the special meanings. That means different stress leads to different meanings.
Mr Li owns a four-bedroom flat. (It is Mr Li that owns a four-bedroom flat.)
Mr Li owns a four-bedroom flat. (He does not rent the flat from others.)
Mr Li owns a four-bedroom flat. (It is a four-bedroom flat, not another kind of flat.)
Mr Li owns a four-bedroom flat. (It is a flat, not a house.)

Step 7 Practice
1. Express different meanings by stressing different words.
T: Look at this sentence. Can you stress different words to express different meanings?
I didn’t say he stole the money.
I didn’t say he stole the money.
I didn’t say he stole the money.
I didn’t say he stole the money.
I didn’t say he stole the money.
(Play the five videos.)
2. Complete Part B.

V. Homework
1. Listen to the tape and read the sentences on Page 39.
2. Write some sentences and practise stressing some words.
