I stopped when I got to a garage-like place and walked to the metal door with brown paint. I turned the knob (把手) and walk in. A thousand eyes looked at me as I took my place at the end of the long line. When I finally got up to the window, I handed the officer my ID. 'I’m here to visit Mr C. Yes, I’m his daughter. '
The officer handed me a piece of paper with my name as the visitor and my father’s as the prisoner. It told me which floor to go to. As I got on the lift, a rush of excitement ran through me. Then I went to the eighth floor, looked around and saw the faces I saw here every Sunday and Thursday.
There he was. I stood on tiptoe (脚尖) to get a better view since I could hardly see him. He didn’t look like my father. He’d got a beard (胡子) now and he looked weaker. He was the dad that I saw through a window. My dad was separated from the world. The only place he now knew was his room in the prison. When I looked deep into his eyes, I see emptiness and pain.
It was difficult to hear him through the thick glass and over everyone else who was trying to talk. We tried to carry on a normal conversation about simple things including my day and what I was doing in school, but we mostly talked about how we couldn’t wait until he got out.
My favorite place was where my father was—prison. I know, how could it be anyone’s favorite place? But it was because my father was there. It would no longer be my favorite place once he got out, though—home will be.

Mozart was one of the greatest composers who ever lived. He was born in Austria, in 1756. Even when he was very young, Mozart loved music. His father, who was the leader of an orchestra, was very happy that his son was so interested in music. When Mozart was three years old, he learned to play the harpsichord, which is a kind of piano. Mozart began to compose music at the age of five, and his father took him to play in front of the kings and queens of Europe.
At one concert, one of the violinists was missing from the orchestra. Mozart picked up a violin and played the music without a mistake. His father and the other players in the orchestra were surprised. Mozart had never learnt to play the violin! Mozart continued travelling around Europe with his father, who was his teacher in everything. He composed many pieces for the piano, the violin, and later for full orchestra.
Mozart could write down a piece of music even if he had heard it only once. One day, he went to hear a group of people singing in a big church in Rome. The song was very special. The church leader said that people could sing the song only once a year, and only in his church. No one else was allowed to have the music. Mozart listened to the song. Although it was very difficult and long, Mozart went back home and wrote down the whole piece from memory. The head of the church heard about this, and instead of being angry with Mozart, he gave him a prize.
When Mozart grew up, people were not so interested in him. He worked as a teacher and pianist, but he did not make much money. In 1791, at the age of 35, he died. He was so poor that there was not enough money for him to have a proper grave. No one knows where he is buried.

In the US and Britain, the slogan (标语) around colleges was “Save water. Shower with a friend.” Now, Wuhan University has come up with another system for the campus bathhouse. Before entering the bathhouse, students pay 1 yuan per minute with money or their student ID card. The clock starts moving the minute the tape is turned on. It stops when a button (按纽) is pressed for soap (香皂). An IC card reader at each tap shows the time. No money, no water. The benefit of the new system can be seen with the old system, the university used about 320 tones of water daily under the old system, but only 160 tons now.
Students have different opinions about the new system. Some say it is bad because bathing had become a race. Many people using it for the first time are not sure how long they need to shower. Some might be embarrassed if their time is up and they’re still covered in soap. They have to ask the bathhouse worker to help them buy extra (额外的) time.
“It’s a fault in the system that you can not buy extra time on the ID card,” said Ren, a freshman in Wuhan University. The university is also considering some students’ suggestions that they may be allowed to pay after they’ve finished the shower. But many students say the system helps them develop a water-saving sense.
Some even used the hot water to wash their clothes. “In my experience, 10-20 minutes is enough,” said Dai Zhihua, a third-year student who usually takes 8 minutes.
A similar system has been set in other universities. Shanghai Normal University introduced it at its Fengxiang Campus in September. The bathing fee there is 0.2 yuan per minute. One male student responded by setting a record with a two-minute shower.
56. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?
A. Students pay for the amount of time they want in the shower.
B. The clock times all through while the student is bathing except when the bather stopped for soap.
C. If money runs out, there will be no water.
D. After finishing bathing, the student has to pay for it.
57. The underline word “benefit” (in Paragraph 1) most probably means ________.
A. appearance                B. advice                     C. competition             D. advantage
58. Since the new system has performed, ________ of water can be saved.
A. a quarter                   B. one third                 C. a half                             D. two thirds
59. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.
A. The university has saved a lot of water by using the new system.
B. All the students in Wuhan University supported the new system.
C. Students can use IC cards to buy extra time.
D. The new system can raise all the students’ environmental awareness.
