This dictionary tells you about English words and how to use them in reading, writing and speaking English. It not only gives the meaning of words, it can also help you with spelling, word building, grammar and pronunciation.
To use your dictionary correctly, you need to understand how the dictionary works. At the front of the book, you will find some exercises to help you make the most use of your dictionary.
If you look up the word 'colour', you will find two spellings for this word. 'Colour' is used in British English, while 'color' is used in American English. When such a thing happens, the dictionary shows it with the word 'BrE' for British English and 'AmE' for American English.
The dictionary also helps you pronounce words correctly. It uses a special alphabet(特殊字母表) to show pronunciation. If you turn to the inside back face, you will see all the phonetic letters(音标) with some words to show you how they are pronounced. Just have a look at this page when you're not sure how to say a word.
The most important reason for using a dictionary is to find out the meaning of a word-its definition.
In this dictionary, the definitions have been written using only 2,000 words. This means that the definitions of even the most difficult words are simply explained and easy to understand.

When you watch 3D movies or TV, you have to wear a special pair of glasses. The 3D glasses make the images from the screen look like they are there in the room with you.
Three-dimensional, or 3D, means having three dimensions(维度): width, height and depth 3D technology(技术)is based on the way the human brain(大脑)and eyes work Because the pupils of a person's eyes are about 6. 5cm apart(分开), when we look at something, each eye sees it from a different angle（角度）．Our eyes send the two images to our brain, and the brain puts them together. The small difference between the image from the right eye and the image from the left eye allows us to see depth.
When we view pictures and television in two dimensions, each eye gets the same information. That is because the image has no real depth, and there is only one of viewing it. So the goal of 3D technology is to get a different image into each of the viewer. It uses two film projectors. One projects a left eye image and the other projects a right image. The 3D glasses allow us to see a different image in each eye.
While watching 3D films, we feel that we are in the same environment as the things we're watching. However, it also has its disadvantages. The 3D glasses work by controlling the amount of light that reaches the eyes. It makes the screen look darker. What's more, people with eye problems may get headaches if they spend too much time watching 3D movies, because their brains need to work harder to 'read' the images.

Compare your pronunciation with the master version(原版) to see how you can do better and have another go. If you do this several times, you will find that each time is better than last.
Why not learn with someone else?
It helps if you can learn with someone else. If you can persuade(劝说) a friend or family member to study with you, it will make you keep working.
Don't get stuck by a word you don't know.
Practise improving ways of getting your meaning across when speaking spontaneously(本能地), even if you don't know the exact words or phrases. Think of things you might want to say when you have spare time. Use facial expressions, hand movements, anything to make yourself understood.
Language learning is also about intuition(直觉).
Guesswork is an important way to learn a new language. When listening to recorded material, you aren't expected to understand everything first time round. If you play the same piece several times, you will most probably understand something new each time.
Build up your vocabulary.
A wide vocabulary is the key to successful language learning but don't try to learn too much at once. It's best to study frequently, for short periods of time. Take at most six or seven items of vocabulary and learn them. Put them into sentences to fix them in your mind, and then come back to them later.
